What's the deal with hull plates?

apparently using the same ship design and different hull platings will alter the g-factor… which significantly confuses me, since the failure point of the outer shell of a ship should be significantly higher than the crew in all cases.

this also means that when adding a g-seat, you alter the physical characteristics of the ship hull-which is insane, stripping the hull plating and swapping it in the background just to fit a few chairs inside the bridge and crew quarters.

how/why do hull plates play into acceleration limits other than the mass they contribute?

the whole time i thought they altered the g-limit as a function of their mass, since heavier ship can’t accelerate as quickly, and therefore the g-load is lesser. but now i’m realizing that acceleration isn’t going down when going from lhp to bhp. and i finally actually looked at the g-limit for higher end plates, which prompted this question.

the limiting factor for acceleration should be the crew. the hull should not be a factor in this whatsoever… unless there’s inertial dampers being installed? but if that’s the case, you wouldn’t need seats to protect the hull.

TL;DR: hull plates don’t make sense

The structure and the crew both influence the max acceleration a ship can do, why they are additive, nobody knows. There should be a split max g for crew and hull, with the lower of the two counting as the final max g.

Yes realistically the crew should be the first limiting factor but we don’t know what the in universe “standard” is. Lorewise the crew could be genetically modified or the seats or suits could be so that they can take 10g or more. Gameplay wise having both on somewhat even ground makes sense.

Here are the values for the different hull plates (and their metal weights):

  • LHP: 10g 4t (6,75t)
  • BHP: 8g 9t (8,71t)
  • RHP: 11g 10t (11,55t)
  • HHP: 13g 10t (11,73t)
  • AHP: 15g 10t (22,53t)

weird things:

  • LHP is by far the lightest and cheapest but is rated for 2g more than BHP which makes them by far the best standard hull plate
  • BHP weight almost as much as the advanced hull plates but has the lowest g rating
  • RHP, HHP and AHP all have the same weight but different g ratings so you can as well always use AHP for the higher damage reduction

The g ratings of BHP and LHP should be switched and the weight of all plates should be adjusted to make the other plates viable as LHP just are too weight and cost efficient.

I have tried hull platting in hope to reduce damage, and save money.

Reduced damage is questionable, but extra costs are real. I am going back to standard design, because advanced platting is expensive, and usually in shortage.

I have played with various designs if ship, and there is very little real advantages.

Engines…very little travel reduction, but costs are brutal.

High-G seats make little difference.

It is weird why there are so many options, yet very little real advantages.

The other hull plates are just too heavy compared to LHP so the money you save through repairs will be used multiple times to buy fuel and it slows down the ship too. AHP are readily availble but shields often aren’t (AWH has better availability than the others). Shields are expensive but only add very little weight and no volume so no additional travel costs. If you need shields depends heavily on the routes you fly as MOR for example has only one high rad system.

HTE with AGS should save time and money as the HTE is a bit more fuel efficient than FSE and has way higher thrust so the ship accelerates faster and drifts longer but the ROI is long (didn’t math it yet).
