I think you have already been walked through this in global chat by Slomes, so really just documenting here for anyone else who sees this.
It is not a bug, this is the expected behavior when a contract is breached.
First suggestion is, when it looks like you might miss a deadline, reach out to the other party via in game DM and let them know, give them your ETA, and ask for a contract extension. 99.99% of the players of this game will be very understanding and accommodating as long as you aren’t abusing the kindness.
Second, as I believe you have now done, when you breach, reach out to the player via in game DM and work out a way to address the situation together. Again, 99.99% of the players are very accommodating and will be happy to work it out with you.
