New Player Experience - UI, Tutorial and Bulletin Board

Hey, new player here! I’ve been playing for a week now, and I want to share my experience and ask some questions about certain features. I’ve read through parts of this forum, the roadmap, and some posts about other beginners’ experiences so I wouldn’t ask the same questions, but since I’ve only been here for a week, please correct me if I’m wrong about anything!

First of all, I wanted to say that this game is truly a hidden gem, and I’m mad I didn’t find it earlier. The main concept is really unique, and I fell in love with it immediately. I’ve seen a lot of posts saying that the early gameplay is very slow and empty, but I had a completely different experience. I’ve spent the whole week in Google Sheets trying to find high-demand products that I can already make at T1 and sell for a good price. I tried PRUNplanner, but didn’t like it that much, so I ended up using it more as a testing tool to check whether I’d made any miscalculations. So yeah, the core gameplay is amazing!

Besides that, I’ve seen a lot of beginners complaining about the learning curve and unintuitive UI, and that wasn’t my experience at all. The tutorial is great, and the whole modular UI is easy to use. That said, I think the only thing I missed in the tutorial was more practice with the various commands and identifiers - everything else is already clear enough.

Now to the main topic: there’s one feature I really miss, or maybe I just haven’t discovered it yet. I understand that the dev team is small and that there are already so many planned features, so I don’t want to sound like someone who’s played for a week and already knows how to make a better game. It’s just the biggest thing that came to mind, and I’d like to hear the community’s and the developers’ opinions on it:

Right now, I see that the game has a lot happening, both economically and politically. There’s a lot of information and numbers under the hood, but I feel like it’s always hidden somewhere, and the game lacks a good way to present it in a more engaging way. I think some kind of bulletin board would make the game feel much more immersive. I searched the forum for similar features and found something from a 2015 devlog, but I’m not sure whether it was removed or abandoned.

It could add some missing context and world-building to the game: advertisements, grants, corporation information and recruitment, maybe even player- or government-sponsored newspapers with weekly reports. I understand that most of these things currently happen on Discord, but part of this game’s appeal is that it’s all contained within a single browser window. So my question is: is Discord intended to remain the long-term solution for this kind of interaction?

I understand that the core playerbase is more interested in production and trading, and that a feature like this doesn’t directly expand the core gameplay mechanics. Still, I feel like a more alive world could attract a larger playerbase - people who simply want to immerse themselves in a large, living universe.

Anyway, this is almost a dream game for me, so I’m happy to play it in its current state, support it financially, and watch it grow. Have a good day, everyone!

My take is there’s tons of buy-in on the Discord, so getting people to move off would be hard and would not really bring that much benefit. Meanwhile, tons of higher-priority gameplay improvements could be made.

Welcome to the game and hope you enjoy it! I think AGM-114 is correct that alot of the things you are looking for are already on the discord(s) - both the official one and the several that have grown up around it - and most are easy to join, just ask and people will post links.

Even though the Dev team is small, they have added a series of things to the game recently that we are all still adjusting to - for example the gateways is something that everyone is still adjusting to.

Got it! I joined the official Discord and the UFO one. If I understand correctly, UFO is the one with the ads, news, and discussions?

My point wasn’t that Discord sucks, but rather that it’s a separate platform, which adds more friction. That said, I understand that’s how things are and I’m sure I’ll get used to it over time. Thanks!

Could it be that you are German? Because in my experience many German games have often a simple but efficient UI that isn’t made to please new players but to be usable in mid and especially late game. And many Germans (including me) usually find it pretty intuitive to use.

Yes, something like planet (and in future faction gov) pinning something in their respective chats would already help a lot. But a faction / universe bulleting board would be interesting too. All that would add more moderation work though, and currently most of this stuff alrady happens on Discord though so it isn’t too urgent. (mostly the regional Discords)

Most of the traffic is on the regional discords but UFO is currently being restructured to be more relevant as the “central / universe wide discord”. The official Discord is mostly for discussions about game mechanics and improvements.

I agree with you that having it ingame would be useful - but there are things I want (space elevators!!! terraforming!!! variable cost for base slots; quality of life upgrades (ie the warehouse/base inventory issue)) to see developed that would have a bigger impact on the game mechanics given that discord does exist. I don’t want you to think that I disagree with you - I just want to see other things first.

Could it be that you are German?

No, but I’m into stuff like modular synthesis, motion graphics, and automation (and basically everything node-based or modular), so maybe my brain is just wired for systems like that!

currently most of this stuff alrady happens on Discord though

After spending some time on the UFO and ADI servers, I understand what everyone was talking about. It really would be a crazy amount of work to build similar functionality, and I’m not even sure it’s possible. Anyway, those servers are already doing their job really well, so my original question isn’t really relevant anymore. To be honest, I’m shocked that this community is so active and so big. It’s crazy!

Thanks for your answer!

Yes, everything on the roadmap sounds so cool, I can’t wait to see it implemented! What’s the best way to support the devs at the moment? Subscriptions and donations?

Originally, I thought the biggest issue was discoverability, but now I see how big the community is and how many new players join every day. I watched the last State of the Universe livestream, and the devs mentioned expanding the core team. I really hope that happens eventually!

(But the discoverability really is crazy. I was literally looking for a game exactly like this - an asynchronous space management game - and still ended up finding it completely by accident!)

I would be more happy with fundamental things like rewarding specialization to get more trade going (in a trading game) to get the CX liquid, and taking care of the plot issue before that.

LMAFO im dying

I was just speaking from my experience as in other such games about half of people that said “I find it intuitive” also were German.

Discoverability, while better, is still not amazing. Spreading the word can always help! Last I checked we’re at about 4,000 stable; one of the biggest issues is new player attrition, though the community has built some systems to try and help with that.
If a monetary coontribution is more your thing, yes, the subscriptions absolutely help! In addition, there are some extra support tiers that give the devs a bit of a boost (and you get cool perks too!)
(NOTE: I’m not a dev, nor a member of the team. These are just the things I’ve noticed and would/do do myself to help the game)
