The introduction of colony ships sounds like a fun addition. Two questions:

  • Are there going to be new planets/systems that ONLY colony ships can reach?
  • It seems that these are very long flights (in the example given the “floating” portion of the flight will take several days). Are colony ships going to be included in the 2 flights at a time maximum for Basic licenses? That would severly hamper my operations.

Yes.

Yes, they count towards that limit.

We expect that at least some of the new systems will be accessible via gateways eventually.

So are colony ships going to basically be resource extraction platforms? Park over planet and instead of making a base on it - the ships mounts rigs/collectors/extractors???

No, colony ships are used to jump to systems that either have no direct FTL connection, or no FTL connection at all. They cannot hold production facilities. Their purpose is to bring initial building materials to theses systems so new bases can be established.

Oh, okay, the title “Colony Ships” got me excited there  (That is another way to evade part of the permit wall - have a ship that can only do extraction work and is crazy expensive).

But I do see a problem with this - if the colony ship is that expensive (someone quoted $28M) then only senior players can probably afford it - but senior players are probably already having problems with the permit wall. So the only way to get them to use this is if the new bases can be crazy profitable. Unless bases “out-beyond” don’t need permits or run on a different type of permit - I don’t forsee alot of pickup. And if those materials are required for jump-gates then I can see a few bases which are group funded just to get the materials - but nothing like an actual populated area. (ie only resource extraction bases).

I don’t see it as an issue. It’s a challenge that players will have to overcome, and it does not impact existing empires at all.

Resources could be made very bulky and require refining to be shipped efficiently elsewhere.
